Home Sellers: 7 Things That Need To Go Before You Start to Show

Updated: Apr 6, 2023

It's important to create an environment that appeals to potential buyers. This means removing certain items that may be distracting or a turn off.

  1. Extra Furniture. Too much furniture can make a room look cluttered and small, and smaller = less valuable. You're not selling furniture.

  2. Family Photos and Baby Photos. No one can envision themselves somewhere with another families photos everywhere. Imagine leaving the photos of the random families that come in frames scattered around - you start to feel like a stranger.

  3. Clutter. Like the People Magazine sitting on the coffee table that hasn't been touched since 2018.

  4. Pets. While you may love your pets, its seen as additional wear and tear on your home and people can be allergic.

  5. Candles and Glade Plug-Ins. Eucalyptus won't sell your home for more, but it could give someone a headache.

  6. Taxidermy or Trophies, this isn't Hunger Games - it's Love it or List It and you're listing it.

  7. Bold Colors: I love a bold Color but think less Crayola and more muted colors.

This will create a space that is more appealing to potential buyers. Remember, the goal is to create a neutral environment that allows potential buyers to envision themselves living in the space. You want your staging to showcase the space not the stuff that it's it. So take the time to declutter, remove personal items, and create a clean, organized environment, and you'll increase your chances of selling your home quickly and at a good price.
